Reporting Crimes and Emergencies
The Safety and Security Department is authorized by the College to prevent, investigate, and report any violations of state or federal Law and/or College regulations on campus. The Safety and Security Department reports directly to the Dean of Students.
Any student, faculty member, or employee of Vassar College should directly report any potential criminal act or other emergency to any officer or representative of the Safety and Security Department. Callers should dial 845 437 7333 for immediate assistance. Calls may also be made by using one of the “Blue Light” telephones located throughout campus. This emergency telephone system is linked directly to the Campus Response Center, which is located in the Main Building Lobby. Upon receipt of the call, officers are dispatched to the site, an investigation is conducted, and appropriate action taken.
In the event that a situation arises, either on or off campus, that, in the judgment of The President, The Dean of the College, The Director of Safety and Security and/or a Senior Officer, constitutes an ongoing or continuing threat, a campus-wide “timely warning” will be issued. The notification will include a short description of the crime or incident, giving the time and date, location, reported offense, suspect description, and any other pertinent information used to facilitate the crime. The notification will also include personal safety information to aid members of the College community in protecting themselves from becoming victims of a similar crime. The warning will be distributed via campus-wide e-mails to students, faculty, and staff. Depending on the nature of the emergency, a decision will be made to utilize other methods of notification including broadcasts on the College network, the activation of our emergency sirens and posting of flyers entitled “Campus Alert” on building entrances.
Safety and Security also meets with a representative for the school newspaper on a weekly basis during the academic year.
